What else do you need from me?
Parenting After Separation certificate of completion
You are required to take the Parenting After Separation course if one of the following circumstances apply to you:
if you are getting divorced and you have children under the age of 16;
if you are a parent and wish to make an application under the Family Law Act and you have children under the age of 16;
if you are a parent and are the Respondent in an application under the Family Law Act and you have children under the age of 16; or
other circumstances as your lawyer may advice.
Please review the attached Notice of Mandatory Seminar for more information regarding the Parenting After Separation course. You may register online here:
You may be barred from making a court application or obtaining your divorce until the original certificate of completion is filed with the Court.
Photograph of your spouse
If we file commencement documents on your behalf, these documents must be served personally on your spouse. In most circumstances, you cannot serve your spouse yourself. We will arrange for a process server to serve these documents on your spouse and we will require a photograph of your spouse for enclosure in the Affidavit of Service.
Marriage Certificate
If you have retained your original marriage certificate, please provide the original certificate to our office. If you have not retained the original certificate, you may need to contact the registry of the province (or country) in which you were married. This is required to complete the divorce process as the Court requires proof of the particulars of your marriage.
The certificate that is required is not the certificate signed by the Justice of the Peace or religious official that performed the ceremony; rather, this is the certificate issued by Vital Statistics (or similar registry in other provinces or countries). In Alberta, a marriage certificate looks like the sample below. Either the small or large version is acceptable.
